Orchestra New England
Our Story
Orchestra New England (ONE) is one of the most versatile and exciting orchestras in America. The Orchestra is committed to quality and innovation, a commitment that has made its artistic achievements possible by generating and nurturing an unusual workplace and a remarkable orchestra.
Since its founding in 1974, Orchestra New England has presented hundreds of concerts with a passion for excellence and signature enthusiasm. In fact, O.N.E. celebrated it's 50th birthday just last year with a concert on March 9, 2024 of Charles Ives's music at Sprague Hall at Yale - exactly where it all began back in 1974. (See our cover photo.) Our annual Colonial Concert, where we recreate a concert setting from the late 1700s, is held at United Church on the Green. Many concerts take place at Battell Chapel on the Yale campus, and the Unitarian Society of New Haven in Hamden. Our March 2025 concert featured Haydn's Clock Symphony and a wonderful song cycle by Yale alum Lori Laitman: Becoming a Redwood. And our final concert of the 2024-25 season took place a little over a week ago, featuring a major work by Mexico's greatest composer, Silvestre Revueltas, O.N.E.'s principal flute Adrianne Greenbaum performing a Telemann concerto, and the ever-popular Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns.
From its 1974 debut performance of an unpublished work by Charles Ives to its almost 150 performances of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker," O.N.E. continues to set the standard for outstanding performances of both familiar and neglected works by Classical, Romantic and Modern composers.
Today, O.N.E. is unsurpassed among musical ensembles between New York and Boston in the number of commercial recordings it has created. These include CBS Masterworks's world premiere recording of the Villa-Lobos folk opera Magdalena, New World Records's release of Cole Porter's first Broadway hit 50 Million Frenchman, and both Naxos's and Koch International Classics's world premiere recordings of orchestral music by Charles Ives. These recordings have met with extraordinary critical praise. In June 2023 Naxos released O.N.E.'s recording of Charles Ives's complete Sets for Chamber Orchestra - it was recorded in March 2024 in a 3-day recording session at Choate. O.N.E.'s newest recording of music by Charles Ives, recorded at Choate in March 2024, was released in October, 2024 - Charles Ives Orchestral Works.
