Our Story

Junta means "to come together"—and together, we are transforming lives.

For over 56 years, Junta for Progressive Action has stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity for Hispanic and immigrant families in Greater New Haven. Founded in 1969, Junta was created by a group of Puerto Rican parents and local activists who saw the urgent need to address inequities in education, employment, and social services for newly arriving families. What began as a grassroots movement has grown into one of New Haven’s most trusted community-based organizations, providing a full spectrum of culturally responsive services that support economic mobility, family stability, and civic engagement.

Our work is grounded in community-driven solutions that reflect the lived experiences of the people we serve. While the majority of our participants identify as Hispanic or immigrants—many of whom are first-generation, low-income families—our services are open to anyone in need. At Junta, language, culture, and compassion are at the heart of how we serve. More than 90% of our staff are bilingual, and most are from the very communities we support.

Junta’s legacy of leadership continues today as we deliver high-impact programs through our Junta 360 Social Services, Community Health, Adult Education, and Youth Empowerment departments. From assisting over 3,500 community members annually with housing, healthcare access, and immigration support, to guiding youth on their journey to higher education, Junta is helping build stronger families and a more equitable New Haven.

As the oldest nonprofit in New Haven that provides comprehensive services fully in Spanish, Junta plays a critical role in bridging information and service gaps for the Hispanic and immigrant community. We also lead vital Know Your Rights workshops, Cafecito con Junta community conversations, and health initiatives that promote resilience and empowerment.

Despite facing increasing demands due to changes in federal immigration policy and funding cuts to social services, Junta remains unwavering in its commitment. With the support of our donors, partners, and community, we continue to rise together, ensuring every family has the tools and support to build a brighter future.
